Is My Google TV Now Obsolete?

by Elrond_the_Ent

With the announcement of Android TV, and seeing the lack of support for existing apps and lack of enthusiasm for bringing [what should be essential] apps like HBOGO to the platform, is my TV dead?

I love my TV, it's a second generation LG Google TV. I love the fact that I can just go right into the Netflix app and watch shows. I didn't mind the price, I love being able to stream from YouTube to my TV, and it's the biggest TV I've ever owned (bought when I bought my first condo just over a year ago). I am also glad that I can plug my ethernet cable into it, instead of having to rely on Wi-Fi.

I hate the fact that I don't have access to apps like HBO Go, Showtime's app, or most other mainstream channels. It also drives me crazy that I can only cast to my TV from YouTube, no other app allows me to cast to my TV.

With the Chromecast in the bedroom, I can cast anything from my phone or table to my TV. I believe that Android TV will have this capability.

What are your thoughts guys?

So here is my opinion. Basically it's like you own an older Android device that will never get upgraded. Combo of an abandoned platform, and hardware that can't handle the new stuff. Add in a dash of an oem not caring about giving you an upgrade on top of that. An example would be a 3+ year old device from Samsung, LG, HTC, etc that are no longer getting updates, however you will probably stop receiving updated apps too since the apps like Netflix and more aren't getting updated. These apps are platform specific as well. The good news (not for you) is that Google learned from their mistakes of having this TV specific platform, and created Android TV. Android TV is basically the same Android version you run on your phone and tablet that knows to adjust to screen size and device. So the small bits of code for Android TV will be in your other devices, just not used. I'm in the same boat as you, and I'm sure others are as well, just not as deep. I spent 250 on a logitech box. Not only is it basically worthless, the fan shitted out so I couldn't use it if I wanted to. Logitech pulled out of this market, I have a paperweight sitting in a box in my closet. I feel like Google TV never got past the stage of being an early adopter, and a lot of people got burned. Even my best friend who loves Android won't give Android TV any kind of chance yet because he feels burned and doesn't trust a new TV experience just yet. I'm not sure this was the answers you were looking for, but hope I helped somewhat.

Prior to Google I/O, an Android TV partner stated that some manufacturers would OTA upgrade their Google TV devices to Android TV.
