Android TV Question: Will it run mobile/tablet apps?

For Example:

NBC Live Extra has a decent app for android/iOS/windows 8. It allows you to watch the Premier League and many other sports in HD pretty much anywhere.

However, NBC (Comcast) have not brought their NBC live extra app to any set top box platform (Chromecast/roku/fire tv/ect).

I believe this is because they do not want people to watch over the net on the big screen when it is available through their cable TV service.

Since I can assume they won't build a android TV optimized version of NBC Live Extra will an apk for the mobile or tablet version run on the Android TV software?

Haven't tried the NBC app but I have side loaded HBO Go and it works. Only issue is you can't see what you're selecting with the game pad but I've gone around that by pairing a Bluetooth mouse which shows a pointer.
