Ditch other remotes with AndroidTV (Xbox One style)

by ztaccardi

My Xbox One lets me ditch my TV remote and do the following:

  • turn the TV on/off
  • turn volume up/down
  • toggle mute

Why can't an Android TV device do the same via HDMI-CEC?

I want Android TV to be the #1 computing platform for the TV, but that cant happen until the above are accomplished.

Notes:

  • chromecasting already turns the TV on, so we are at least partially there.
  • I know AndroidTV is so new, but with the above core features this software could revolutionize the TV interface.
  • HDMI-in would be nice too.

I use my Harmony Smart Control remote with the Nexus Player. Android TV will do all or the things that you want, but likely when it starts to ship on smart TV's. Assuming of course that happens.

Nexus Player, ADT-1 and and probably any other set tops that come after them aren't likely to include universal remote capabilities. It adds to complexity and cost.

I post this in pretty much all these threads. I just use a cheap universal remote (it was like a $10 RCA) and I use FLIRC connected to USB OTG.

How do you turn off the tv with Xbox?

Android TV has an API for HDMI-CEC: https://source.android.com/devices/tv/HDMI-CEC.html

This requires support from the device manufacturer. The Nexus Player does support HDMI-CEC. It can turn on some TVs. And some TVs will pass remote commands to the Nexus Player.

I think that's for TVs that have Android TV built in.

We should hope that type of support can be brought to set top boxes to control the TVs.

All I want is when you hit the home button it'll change the input to the Nexus Player. PS4 does it when I hit the PS button so why can't it?
