Does anyone know if the leanback launcher can be installed on other devices? Like a cheap android hdmi stick?
Far more details required. "Build" in what sense of the word?
Id love to stick it on my tiny living room htpc. Been wondering if you can emulate android TV somehow on a PC.
Yes but probably with Android and not "Android TV"
You are better off buying an Android Box with an RK3289 chip. Take a look at Geekbuying.com
We're designing and building a quad-core Android TV box (Android 5.x) because we couldn't find one ourselves. Google tells us that the only boxes available (for now) will be gaming streamer boxes, and we need HDMI input (ie. like Google TV) for our Skipr.tv application.
Our hardware is in the middle of chipset testing with partners and will take another two months or so for the final design. But if you're interested, hop over to our site (skipr.tv) and sign up and we'll keep you in the loop. The box will ship with our app installed but you can use it for whatever you want. The nice thing is the drivers and firmware updates are included going forward so you're not on your own.
I had a similar idea. I've seen multiple Android on PC projects, and since the Nexus Player is an x86 platform I suspect it should even be easier to port over. I don't have an awful lot of free time otherwise I'd try it myself, but the idea is basically to start with an Android x86 project and try to somehow slipstream the Nexus Player system onto it (I know similar things have been done with other devices). I suspect it's not impossible, just requires a lot of dedication.
Probably. You'd have to write your own drivers and compile from source. And it doesn't look like the android TV platform source is available yet
