Quick Review of my Razer Forge TV (x-post from r/razer)

by cords911

Pros:

  • XBMC runs great. (I had to install the APK from the website)
  • Works with both my wired and wireless usb xbox controllers.
  • Nice looking hardware.
  • Games run great

Cons:

  • No Netflix. I was able to side-load it, but no icon appeared on the menu. Someone smarter than me will get it working correctly.
  • I haven't had luck casting Netflix from my phone (was able to cast Youtube).
  • Razer's remote app isn't great. Takes too long it connect and it disconnects as soon as you leave the app (to answer a text or a screen timeout or anything).
  • Android TV isn't mature, the App selection is small.
  • No PC streaming at launch.

If you have any questions I'll do my best.

Is it snappy? Do the main apps work well (Hulu, sling, Amazon video, HBO go)? Can it do universal search, ie. Is pulp fiction playing on any of my streaming services? Does it ever crash or hang, become unresponsive or janky?

I still don't understand, do android tv devices use the same play store as tablet or phones, or only a smaller portion of "compatible apps"? Because for example, latest updates of mx player announce support for android tv devices, but the app doesn't appear on the android tv section of the play store (i searched "android tv play store" on google since i don't own one yet)

Have you tried any emulators by chance? If so, do they run well?

I agree with most of what you say in your review. As soon as this thing has Netflix a few more games and more emulator support it will be great. Unless you really want the Serval controllers I'd think twice about getting one. The Y, X, B, A buttons feel and sound cheap and my Serval's bluetooth connection stability is limited to a few inches (currently troubleshooting the Forge/Serval with Razer).
