Razer Forge TV Thoughts/Mini-Review

by voltron00x

From where I'm sitting, the Razer Forge TV, as a product, attempts to do three things: stream video content, provide native Android gaming, and stream PC games. I preordered it based on the idea that this box could replace what, right now, takes multiple devicies to do. Unfortunately, in varying degrees, it fails at all of them.

1 - Android TV-based Content Streaming

The Razer Forge TV technically accomplishes this, however seeing as the best content providers - including but not limited to Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Go - are not natively available, I can't imagine anyone being satisfied with this as a streaming content box. The lack of an on-screen keyboard in the UI means that the Serval controller is only partially functional as a remote control for the device. Plus the functionality of the app in general is a train wreck.

2 - Android Gaming

Utilizing mid-2014 higher end mobile processing power, the Forge TV handles native Android gaming quite well. That said, the absence of an SD/Micro-SD card slot as well as the included USB drive not functioning (out of the box) as memory expansion means that you're going to run into space concerns. There's also the underlying issue that natively there just aren't a lot of great controller-focused Android games unless you look to emulation. Again, with emulation, you have the same issue as above: you can't even get ROMs onto the box without sideloading a file explorer application.

3 - PC Game Streaming

Not available at launch.

I preordered this device thinking I could upgrade one of my Chromecasts to a better streaming solution that'd also let me play some games (native Android and emulation).

I'm shipping this back to Amazon.

No idea what Razer was thinking. I can buy a low-end PC for barely more than this and get a lot more function, or pay considerably less for a much better streaming experience.

In reviewing their materials it is clear they don't mention any of the services I reference above, and they were up front that PC streaming would come later, so it isn't really that they're being underhanded here, they've just released a pointless brick of a product.

Really a shame as I wanted to like this product.

Edit: current 1.5 star average on Amazon. Ouch.

Limelight works for game streaming.

Any chance you will be giving the Shield TV a chance when it launches later this month? You can be sure that Netflix will be there, streaming will work and the microSD slot will support up to an additional 128 gigs.

my thoughts in a nutshell. dropping the return box off later today.

Most of your knocks are against androidtv the platform not the Forge tv. You shouldn't have expected it to run HBO and amazon when you ordered it. Also you should known the native game situation before ordering.

Androidtv supports on screen keyboard. So that's odd.

Moonlight is awesome. But I understand being disappointed re pc gaming. Sounds like Netflix and pc gaming are due soon. I'd say let's not judge until after i/o.

Part of your #2 is wrong. You don't need to sideload a file explorer. You can use Teamviewer on Android TV (free download) in combination with a PC running TeamViewer (also free) and use the file transfer functionality to get files over. The USB port not working for external storage pisses me off though. This little console will be great soon here. It just needs a few months which I am willing to wait. Until then I will keep my Chromecast to stream Netflix on. You can also use the Android TV remote from Google on the Forge TV. It's infinitely better then Razers app. It connects quick, doesn't time out and disconnect as easily/often either.

Wow, I didn't know that Netflix wasn't on the Forge. What the fuck? Is it just a DRM issue?

Can't say I'm surprised. I'm a Nexus Player owner, but I can't wait to see how the nVidia shield box shapes up. Really disappointing to see the Razer Forge is missing software/features that the Nexus Player has...
