One word. Sixaxis
The obvious one to me is to remove bloat. Depends on your box though. Also, going forward you may want to root to get updates sooner.
Sideloading apps, adding external storage etc. I have rooted my nexus player before but didn't find much use for it TBH
Maybe someone will release a custom rom or kernel for the Nvidia Shield TV, and therefore you will need to be rooted to take advantage of it.
Alternatively maybe this is one device that doesn't need rooting.
