Are there alternatives to the devices that Google lists?

by jdrobert

I want to test a simple app that I'm building but I'd like to avoid spending $100 if I can.

Are there Android TV sticks? Whenever I search Google for that term, I get TV sticks that run Android but not Android TV sticks.

Is there something I can build? Like with a Raspberry Pi 2 or other mini computer?

Thanks and sorry if my questions are dumb :)

No, only the devices Google lists have androidtv. There are however some devices that have androidtv ported but that doesn't allways work that well (and I can't remember the devices). But why don't you just use the android sdk? It can emulate androidtv too without a problem.

You can install an AndroidTV emulator from the Android SDK...

You'll see the manufacturer list in the above link. I have the Razer Forge (jackasses released a streaming box w/out physical remote or Netflix, no app or chromecasting Netflix). Screw them pass up on the forge TV. If if gets updated ..... Maybe consider it. It is nice hardware but app support needs improvement.

I would get the Nexus Player right now. However, Nvidia looks like they are coming out with a really nice one.
