Anyone have a decent guess as to why Netflix isn't on the Razer Forge?

by DownMojo

I know there has been no official word from Razer or Netflix that I could find, so I'm only asking for guesses.

Could it be just different hardware that the Netflix AndroidTV app doesn't support yet? Or licenses the Forge didn't come with?

It looks like Razer used the official AndroidTV build and not a custom one because it comes with the PlayStore.

Being not castable makes me think Netflix is blocking it. Just weird because it says it is "cast ready" so we would have thought that meant Chromecast++.

Thanks for any input!

I too need to know this. My Forge hasn't been touched since the first day I got it because of this. It looks like I might end up eating that $100 loss and just getting an NVidia Shield.

Based on things I have read about Netflix on android and other devices over the years, these are my thoughts. I am pretty much pulling this out of my arse, purely speculation. Netflix only streams HD to approved android devices, it seems to be somehow connected to the play store certification of the playback device. This is why I am surprised the Razer does not have it. Now we know the Nexus Player is Intel based and the forge is a snapdragon ARM processor. So there could be proper coding needs to be implemented for the forge. But Netflix works on the FireTV (krait ARM) and the ADT-1 (Tegra 4 ARM). So I don't understand why not the Forge. Which brings me to why I think the Forge does not have Netflix. I just don't think they have the proper DRM. If I remember it is done using widevine (which may implicate Google is part of the reason). I don't think Razer worked with Netflix properly. I don't know maybe there is some problem regarding cortex and Netflix DRM requirements. Either way I think the Forge was probably rushed out to meet the set ship deadline instead of just being pushed back until they settled the DRM issues.

Releasing a new streaming device on the newest software platform for streaming devices is ambitious and expensive. Basically I think the Forge was shipped before the software was ready (and they already had hardware manufacturing contract commitments)

I am hoping that when the nvidia shield is released (within next month) is at least when we will see Netflix come to the forge.

I've been following this a lot too, ever since the Forge launched, and especially now since the Shield is just around the corner. I still can't decide between the two, taking into account pricing, size (the forge is clearly smaller), and general use scenarios. My guess as to why Netflix isn't on there is actually more related to the launch of the Shield. I read somewhere (i think reddit) where someone floated the idea of the Shield being launched at Google I/O on this coming thursday (28th) being that it is still May, and Nvidia still claims it will be released in May.

The Forge is relevant in this, in that many have argued that the Forge is not ready because Razer wanted to get it out there before Nvidia's Shield (see reddit and the Nvidia forums, sry no links). Netflix probably has a tight agreement with Google to do something at I/O, most likely Nvidia Shield's 4K capabilities. Meaning that if Google is planning to something very Netflix related at I/O, they might have an agreement that Netflix should hold back on updates until then, including blocking Netflix on the Forge. Most likely something like implementing voice search into Netflix on AndroidTV, showcasing 4K Netflix, or something else will happen.

I have no doubt that AndroidTV will be a big deal at I/O, and that up until now it has been mostly a proof of concept. Just look at how many TV manufacturers have built-in AndroidTV this year. In general, I think that Razer got antsy, and wanted the Forge out sooner than the Shield, given what they saw at CES and how much more powerful the Shield is. This has now backfired, because of Netflix issues, which I think Google might be having a hand in blocking because of things they wanna do at I/O. /endrant

TLDR: Google is telling Netflix to block the Forge for now, because they wanna show off some shit at I/O.
