Why does the Nvidia shield remote appear to have IR?

by SockItToYa5

Just got mine. As far as I know it uses bluetooth or wifi. Yet it appears to have IR. Could we see future universal remote/Harmony usage in future update?

Btw. The remote build quality is superb. Think apple remote but 2.5 bigger and with raised textures for buttons. The lighted mic button and the capacitive volume controls are why we're talking $50. Worth it

If you do have one of the newer Harmony remotes withe the wireless hubs, you should be able to add it. The remote acts as a bluetooth keyboard. That's how I connected it to my Nexus Player. During setup, it would be listed as a windows computer in the Harmony program.

What do you mean by appears to have IR? Is it directional or can you cover up the sensor? The Shield TV itself has an IR receiver. But Iam not sure how it works with a harmony. Is there a specific device I can add in my harmony for Android (TV) devices?

IR Receiver (compatible with Logitech Harmony)

Some people like it old school.

The Shield has an IR sensor in the front. I bought a Harmony remote since HDMI-CEC wasn't working right even though my receiver supports it. The only drawback is that the Harmony remote is much slower than the native Nvidia controllers/remotes because it uses IR. It isn't terrible and I doubt most people will care.

I'm using mine with my Harmony remote. I LOVE it. When you have a Harmony remote it can feel like third world bullshit to have to switch to another dedicated remote. I love that I can just access my Google Play music without having to pick up another remote.
