Is Selling Cheap Android TV Boxes Worth It?

by AlphaMW3

Hello r/AndroidTV I'm a college student and this guy friend of mine asked me if I wanted to help him sell these bunch of cheap android tv box copycats. I need some money on the side, but I want to ask you guys as a knowledgeable community what would you do if you were me?

Hopefully you're not selling them to anyone you know, otherwise you'll get a lot of questions, requests for help, returns, etc. More trouble than it's worth, IMO.

Your only market for this are people who don't know that they can buy more directly from the larger sellers. In other words, you're dealing with very newbish users, and they probably only want an Android set top box because someone said it could get them "free movies and TV shows". So if you don't mind being a little dishonest about where things come from, or about how "good" the box is, and you want to deal with noobish customers who will be a nightmare, you might be able to make a little bit of money.

Me personally, I'm too nice about it. I've sold a few extra Kodi-based boxes on ebay before (before the Android set-top-box "boom"), and in my description I told people how they could download Kodi for free. I also said they had to figure out how to get their own movies and TV shows. I got more people who asked me for help than who bought boxes, but I like being honest with people.

Do you know what model of box it is? What chipset it is based on? How much do you need to charge to make a profit? If it is a good box at a good price I could see you making a go of it. Lots of people need help making these boxes work. Maybe come up with a default configuration of apps that your local clients would like. You should probably charge time for any extra configuration help or else they could drain every last minute of your life.

You've got to account the time you're going to have to spend getting these boxes up and running too. Updating the firmware, installing Kodi, running the video wizard, etc. I'm guessing you're looking at a minimum of an hour per box in set up time. Unless you're getting them with all the software pre-installed?
