Nvidia Shield TV issues, considering returning.

by [deleted]

So, a couple of days ago, I was excited for my Shield TV and posted a thread hoping to get some recommendations for apps.

Well, after trying to set it up all day today, I think I might want to return it if certain things can simply not be fixed.

The main thing I was interested in was Gamestream. My connection test comes out fine and my graphics card says it is compatible. However, trying out a supported game like Evil Within is awful. Even on the lowest settings, the game just hardly works, stuttering and swimming through a slow frame-rate and horrible input lag. Maybe I was lead to believe it would work better with my specs but it won't?

Also, certain games on Steam simply don't work, and I was lead to believe that all games on Steam would work, even if not supported. I tried games like Hotline Miami 2, Grow Home, Toybox Turbos and Super Meat Boy. None seem to work with Gamestream.

Everything else the Shiled TV can do is cool but really not worth the $200 price tag for me.

My specs

  • OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40 GHz
  • RAM: 32 GB
  • GPU: GeForce 770M (Notebook)
  • Internet: 22 down, 2-3 up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Need to know your local network configuration like router and Wired/wireless plus distances and cabling.

That's the most important thing for gamestream.

Try setting your tv to game mode. It lowers the refresh rate. I went from about a half second of input lag no virtually no lag at all.

For the games that are not working are they not showing in gamestream or not working when you try and launch them?

If they are not showing then games can be manually added via the Geforce Experience software on PC.

So far every game I've tried has worked except the ones that don't support controllers (for obvious reasons).

Regarding the performance issue. Do these games run fine on the computer when not game streaming? Streaming will put some extra load on the gpu/cpu but surprisingly little from what I've experienced.

Lastly try Moonlight and see if it performs any better.

Also as someone else mentioned your TV should be in game mode, this shoudn't effect the issues you describe but will prevent controller lag.

This is a big concern for me, I'm getting my shield this week mainly for gamestream too, and if my gamestream isn't gonna be working with at least 90% of my library I'm gonna have to reconsider... Is it a common issue? I have stronger specs (970), but also hooking up via Ethernet on both ends, if I got decent performance on in-home streaming on a laptop in the same network config should the shield be as good/better?

Device returned, deleting thread.

My biggest problem is random shut offs. It also acts like it will shut off but then come right back on and it could easily do that multiple times in a row.

Just because you were lead to believe something, doesn't make it true. I own 70+ games on steam and maybe 40 work perfect. This isn't Nvidia-Gaben-Steam. It's a service where half the games that are guaranteed to work are of Asian decent. Return it if you don't enjoy it. We love ours and your opinion won't sway us.
