It works when sideloading, but you need to use keyboard/mouse. At least it worked for me on my Sony Bravia.
I have the chrome extension to download APKs from Google Play . So I downloaded it, installed it via adb to my TV, then tested it out.
If you don't mind a PC/Client setup PlayOn is a really good solution. The amount of content and channels that the software packs with it is well worth the $50 pricetag. You need to sideload Playon to your Android TV but it works great with the remote and you even get a DVR to record VOD content with.
