Any way to enable dynamic range compression?

by donanon

Does anyone know of a way to enable dynamic range compression? I'm noticing a huge range in volume levels between voices and music or other sound effects. Voices are too quiet and sound effects are super loud.

I realize it could just be the videos to blame, but it seems much worse than my HTPC.

I have the Nvidia Shield and the videos are playing through Plex. I just have a 2.1 sound system.

Dynamic range is a function of the amplifier. There is no way for the Shield to do it. Some TVs have it for the built-in speakers and many receivers have it but it is more common at the higher end.

First, you should definitely get a center channel - best way to boost the level of dialogue without keeping the neighbors awake (I usually run my center at around +3db).

Some receivers come with a "night mode" specifically for your purpose.

I have the same issue with Plex on some movies, Kodi has this functionality so for movies that are an issue I use Plexbmc, Amber Skin & Kodi.

It would be nice if Plex added this but I dont think they ever will. I created a Feature request on the Plex forum for this very thing.

Turn down the level on your center channel.
