Legacy YouTube app for GoogleTV killed, viable alternatives with AndroidTV or is it time to get an AppleTV or go Windows thinclient unit?

Hello,

I've been using my Logitech Revue for some time now and since Google finally disabled the legacy version of their YouTube app I am now considering upgrading.

The Play Store reviews for the AndroidTV YouTube app are pretty terrible, so I'm wondering if it will be more of the same issues I now have with GoogleTV.

Feedback is appreciated.

The NVidia Shield is amazing. Can vouch.

YouTube on Android TV works okay. There is no ability to add comments or things like you can with a PC. Apple TV won't be any better. Even Fire TV just points to the /TV website. If you are looming for something that streams great and also want games have a look at the Shield Console.

The best youtube experience on my TV I had is with the youtube app on my phone and casting it to my shield. Commenting, queuing and all of that is super easy. And I can hear the sound through my headphone plugged into the controller if necessary.

Youtube on any TV is simplified and meant for viewing, not commenting. Having said that I enjoy it on my ShieldTV. Apple TV isn't any better and adding that awkward remote is worse. I'd recommend the ShieldTV or Nexus Player. Much more possibilities w/ these especially w/ Kodi.

With an Android TV you at least get more options with YouTube. You can cast to it and you can use the native app with voice search which is actually really accurate. I'm not sure about Amazon's Fire lineup, but I have an Apple TV and it's awful. The easiest, cheapest option is just buying a chromecast.
