Internet connection breaks when DNS codes changed

by spencermehta

I've changed the DNS codes on my Android TV in the static IP setting so I can access Netflix US as I'm in the UK. However, once I change the codes and restart the TV, I have no internet connection through the TV - connection is fine through other devices and with DHCP enabled.

Is there anything I am maybe doing wrong? Do I need to enable static IPs in my router or something?

Thanks in advance for any help

Edit: I managed to fix my problem. It turns out my router uses a non-standard default gateway and so I was entering an incorrect one, having assumed it would use the 'industry standard'.

The easiest and most trouble-free way is simply to change the DNS entries on your router. Your devices should just make DNS requests to your router and let it handle the rest (so leave DHCP as it is).

Chromecast is a bit different, as Google hard-coded its DNS server addresses into its software, but that's another story ...

I've actually been having the exact same problem, still without a stable permanent solution. I've had the DNS settings on my router changed for a long time, and it works flawlessly on all devices in the house.

However, my Shield TV just doesn't seem to like it. I've also tried doing as you, changing the Shield TV to have static IP with all the DNS stuff set up. It works for a day or two, then it just loses internet connection to everything: Netflix, Youtube, Play Store, whatever. I still have connection to my NAS and can stream anything from there.

If anyone has any tips/tricks/stupid-setting-I-haven't-checked-yet, I'd really appreciate it. This is driving myself, and especially the lady crazy. Not exactly getting the girlfriend-approved stamp at the moment..

Info: located in Denmark, want US Netflix, using Unblock-us atm, HOWEVER: have local Google Play Music All Access and want to cast to the Shield TV from time to time, as it's hooked up to my sound system.
