Personally I find that with Android TV, it's a lot easier just to use the Keymap Editor addon for Kodi. So you can remap the buttons on the fly using the UI rather than needing to fiddle with xml files.

I use this key map, it helps alot. For any more in depth control needed, I'll pull out my phone and use yahtze.
