Any else afraid of Apple destroying ATV (Nvidia Shield)?

by zoopz

Rumor has that Apple is making their own device like the Shield. Seeing as Apple polishes their software and Google shows little love for ATV, I am worried this will destroy the Shields' and Androids chances to take over the living room.

We all know the casual gaming catalogue on the Apple Store is superior, developers love Apple.

Im worried this time. There lots of opportunities for many years to conquer this market. It's a shame if a walled garden wins it.

Yeah, no content deals since release essentially. Where are all the apps? Too much focus on gaming and essentially none on content, as far as I can tell.

Don't worry, once the new one (Apple TV) is out, the way it does things will be paid attention to by AndroidTV, Roku, Amazon, etc.

Once customers show try like it, all the other platforms will follow suit.

Nvidia could start by releasing the damn thing in more countries for a start(uk)...or even europe.Great product, but they arent helping themselves.Same goes for Android Tv as a platform, google treats it like a naughty child.I have 2 fire tvs, which are great....but my nexus player barely gets a look in thanks to the lack of apps on the android tv platform, yes i can sideload but the average customer wouldnt have a clue or even want to bother with that.It pains me to say that apple could have a major winner here if certain companies keep being lackluster towards the android tv platform.

Android TV as an OS has been out less than a year. It will need time to build up a giant library of apps and gain widespread support. We are heading in the right direction in terms of features with Marshmallow, and more TVs are being released that feature the Android TV OS baked into them so it's getting out there, albeit slowly. The OS has also received regular updates, so it's not like Google is ignoring it.

Apple TV as a device has been around for YEARS. It's not surprising that more people will have heard of it compared to Android TV.

Will the new Apple TV be better than Android TV? To me, no. I don't own any Apple products and I don't want to be part of its closed ecosystem. I like how open Android TV is. I like installing Kodi without fucking around. Apple TV won't offer this. The people who want an Apple TV likely have no interest in Android TV, and vice versa.

Just finished watching the Apple event showing off their Apple TV.

Very few impressive things, mostly with regards to their MLB app, but everything else was catch up.

Google doesn't have anything to worry about. If anything, this gives Google a couple of ideas, and hopefully it will force Google to take AndroidTV more seriously

Your right Google has and continues to treat Android TV as an engineer's side project done casually on the weekend. Ask the average consumer what the Shield TV is and they might not even know it exists. Now ask those same people about an Apple TV and I bet they have at least heard of it. NVIDIA needs to spend more on advertising their box to the general public. Google needs to advertise the Android TV platform to everyone and get APP developers to prioritize getting their APP on a Android TV within the same month as any other device they launch on.

It was reported that the new AppleTV will not be 4K so it wont be much of a competitor to the Shield no matter what.

Shield should continue to be a much better platform for me because my primary interest is streaming from my gaming PC. I do think the new Apple TV will almost immediately have a better app ecosystem.

I actually find apple stuff usually much worse and behind. But the thing that worries me the apple name can instantly get a lot of press and partners that will prop up the device. It would stink if game makers pass on android tv for the apple device because of the apple name.

Apple TV probably not streaming 4k so I couldn't care less about it. Plus it's Apple. I don't buy Apple.

While I don't think the apple TV announcement was anything impressive there is no denying that apple pushes technology adoption forward. You see this with the smart phone, tablet, watch, NFC payment. So I'm glad. Hopefully it pushes Android TV fwd as well.

More competition will be beneficial to everyone.
