Nvidia Shield TV or Nexus Player

by PreppyAndrew

Hey all I need advice on which box I should get. I am a current owner of Nexus Player. I got this box at launch, and the only real issue I have had is with the Netflix app losing my login.

I currently use my Nexus player for Kodi,Casting, a few games (NBA Jam/Beach Buggy), and a video apps. have a GTX 750 Graphics card which I have tried to use with Moonlight game streaming, with limited sucess. (I think its my network connect, I am using powerline 200 Mps Ethernet).

I have been looking at the Shield TV, but can't find a reason to purchase it for $200. I don't game often, and I am happy with my Nexus Player. Android M will add external HD support, so is there any reason I should get the Shield over the Nexus. Does Gamestream work much better on the official client vs Moonlight?

New Shield owner here.

One thing I can say is that the device is blazing fast. I have no basis of comparison to the Nexus line, but I feel like the Shield's horsepower makes for a great user experience in terms of loading apps and switching between apps.

The option for 4K video is appealing for the future.

Although you're not much of a gamer, I suspect the Shield could change your mind. I love the Grid service. I decided to go this route in lieu of upgrading my gaming PC at a time when PC gaming is undergoing so much change (Windows 10, Steam OS, Virtual Reality). Why deal with trying to make the best decision when I can hold off using the Shield till the dust settles.

Also, nvidia is showing a high level of support for the device, which is always encouraging.

$200 may seem like a big investment when you're uncertain, but I laughed today when I saw the specs of the new Apple TV. It can't even do 4K video.

So if you use your Nexus a lot and desire a potentially faster device with better resolution, great support, and more entertainment options (gaming), the Shield is not a waste. That being said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I have both the Nexus Player and the Shield TV. I love the shield.

Get the shield.

If you feel your issue is a networking one, which you could determine by using a WIFI analyzer app to see your signal from router to device, then I would seriously consider upgrading your router. I just upgraded to an Archer C9 and have completely removed the wifi range extender I had that worked like crap.

Unless you really want to game then I don't see any reason why you should buy the shield. just my two cents though.

Basically the only reasons to get a Shield is because (a) you game, or (b) you have a 4K/UHD TV. Since (a) doesn't apply to you then it comes down to if you have a UHD TV or plan on getting one in the near future.

If you'd improve your network gsmeforce streaming is pretty damn nifty. Grid streaming service awesome too.
