I was going to buy the SATV now that it is available in europe, but looking on the Shield forum i found out that the Nba app seems to not work. Can someone verify this for me? It is basically the must have app for me along with the YouTube app

It's true, and unfortunately that boils down to the Android TV platform and app developers. I'm quite impressed with it hardware wise, though the software does leave a lot to be desired. Mostly because you see glimpses of what is truly possible.
It's working for me. I bought the SHIELD from the US and imported it to UK. App launches, and seems to play some highlight videos OK. I did get a "The video is currently unavailable" error when watching from the "latest" section of the app, though I'm not sure what that is related to.
