On Sony and ADT it works from the store. AP has an apk on ApkMirror now, so you can install it.
Side loaded and works.

It is not listed as compatible for either my nexus player or Forge TV

There's a * with the announcement. Says its only available on "select devices." Of which the Shield is not one.
