I have a Sony TV with Android TV, should I get a NVIDIA SHIELD?

by Nazgulled

Ok, this may seem like a stupid question and kinda yes, I admit that...

I have a brand new Sony TV with Android TV and I'm thinking of getting a NVIDIA SHIELD because of two main features:

  • PC games streaming
  • Powerful hardware to run Android TV where I can install Kodi and replace my custom built NAS/HTPC (and start using that exclusively as a NAS), the TV probably isn't powerful enough.

But then I'll be left with 2 Android TV systems and it might get confusing. Both will have Android apps like YouTube, NETFLIX and games too. The Sony TV is probably not powerful for Kodi.

What would you do? What would you recommend to minimize the confusion between the two systems?

Why not try installing Kodi and see how well it works? It's in the play store, so no rooting or sideloading required. I love my shield, but I hear people like Kodi on the Nexus Player. I'm guessing your TV will run it just fine.

I think there's an app out there that does PC streaming regardless of platform and I also think you may be able to use Playstation controllers.

I have both devices. My Sony 850c handles Kodi just fine, although it is a little bit more responsive on my Shield. I haven't tried games on the Sony, but of course they work phenomenally on the Shield (I wish I could stream in higher resolution however). My netflix on the TV has a section for 4k, however the shield does not which is strange. Other than that they work pretty well together.

PC game streaming.... try Moonlight .

I own the 49" 4k Sony TV and it played almost every video codec I tried. I only had one file that didn't work, unfortunately I don't know the specifics anymore. Kodi runs beautifully on the TV, I use it mainly for IPTV but local video playback works fine as well. If you really have playback issues, you could transcode the files on your NAS (with Plex, Emby or something similar). The Sony TV also has the advantage of exclusive apps like Amazon Instant Video, which you have to sideload on the Shield.

Game streaming should work with Moonlight .

It shouldn't confuse anything. It would simply be another input. On a side note; I also think the TV should be able to handle KODI just fine. Also, if your TV is connected by Ethernet, games should stream fine as well.

Not sure about the NAS though. I think Android TV 6.0 might help with that.

Buy the shield and just forget the Sony one exists.

I refuse to buy smart TV's. They are all crap. If the one you bought isn't crap, I'd be very surprised.

Buy the Shield, and give yourself 30 lashes for wasting money on the "smart" features that you will never use.

I'm joking of course. Seriously though, I've never seen a smart TV with the power to actually keep up. My gf bought a smart TV, and now I can make myself breakfast before the damn thing boots up and I can actually watch something. It's terrible.

AndroidTV was supposed to fix that, but if the hardware isn't there, there isn't much you can do
