Once I am in recovery, I have no idea how to enter the "apply update from usb" mode.
Normally you can hit vol up to get into this mode that lets you adb sideload.
I have my nexus player plugged in to my macbook via usb. (no OTG keyboard)

Just press the button at bottom of nexus player. It scrolls only in one direction. Then long press the same button to select the item.
