Did 60FPS YouTube suddenly start working for anyone else?

by GazaIan

I just got my Nexus Player three days ago and one of the first things I did was check if I can play YouTube videos at 60fps. I was disappointed to see that it wasn't supported, neither through the YouTube app or Google Cast. But today, I was watching a Short Mario Maker video using Google Cast, and suddenly its the first video playing back at 60FPS. The native app still doesn't do it, but I'm alright with that.

Is it working for anyone else?

Yup, no 60fps in the app yet, but I've definitely noticed it working with Google Cast.

How can you even tell if it's working?

The human eye can't see above 30fps /s

Not only does Google Cast seem to support 60fps as it streams from another device that may be playing in 60fps

But I think the encoding used in casting also gives the impression of smoother video as it reconstructs the image, if you cast something like anime, it will appear smoother than it actually is for better or most likely for worse.

I'm actually kind of baffled why 60fps still isn't supported for the damn native app. It doesn't give me hope for Google 's future support of android tv. I have both a nexus player and a shield, really really love both.

I mean, my understanding is that casting should theoretically be a way more restrictive, simplified version of an app... So why the hell does that get 60fps, and my native app still have a terrible interface and only 30fps?

Both the nexus and the shield are easily powerful enough to do 1080p/60fps no problem.

I was just testing this with Nexus Player and noticed it worked fine with Google Cast, weird thing is it seems to be working on some videos with native app, for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfwjzNB--5k

Others like this doesnt play at 60: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLQ6iRl8QPA

It is pretty random in which it works and where it doesn't, but according to the stats option they are in the same format, pretty weird.

Also this same video doesn't play at 60fps on my Shield TV, nothing does in that.

For those who say it is working now on the Shield can you share a link to the specific video to test? thanks.
