Current state of Nexus player?

by vectorzulu

When it first came out the reviews were mostly negative. Did it improve with software updates? I want a Android TV for Netflix and Plex, nothing else. Does the nexus player have and trouble with these things?

Thanks.

Netflix works great on the NP. It is possible to add USB 2.0 devices such as Ethernet, Keyboard and Mouse, or several devices at once by plugging into a USB hub.

Still not as many apps a competitors but better software experience than fire TV and can load up kodi which roku can't. I don't even consider the apple TV to this point until I see how much third parties develop for it.

It works great for plex and netflix, my daughter has one and I have two for work, personally I think they are a steal at $50.

My fiancee has an Apple TV, and I've got a Fire TV Stick along with the NP. The NP works best for Plex, and works very well for Netflix (especially since they fixed SS recently). If you plan to occasionally use it for casting, it's terrible for that, FYI.

I use mine almost solely for Plex. I have used an Ouya and a Chromecast for Plex in the past.

I really liked the Ouya's interface, but I wasn't a fan of using a game controller all the time.

I like the "cleanliness" of the Chromecast when it comes to things I can see below my TV, but the phone as an interface got old. I wanted to be able to quickly pause and sometimes the phone app would disconnect from the CC during playback. It would keep playing the episode or movie, but pausing was a hassle.

Enter the Nexus Player! I'm admittedly a Google fanboy, so that's why I chose the NP over a Roku or FireTV. So far it's been fine. I got it before the Marshmallow update, but only about a month before, so I don't have a ton of pre-6.0 experience. I think 6.0 has a few bugs, but the only ones I've experienced are Recommendations not updating all the time (I only have Plex and Google Music allowed, all others apps are blocked). Sometimes I get duplicates from Plex, sometimes "On Deck" shows don't come up at all. Opening the app fixes them so I assume Android is just freezing the app to free RAM (which is fine on a phone, but dumb on a TV box if the RAM isn't needed).

I have a problem with YouTube where it never works on open. It's just the red and gray background with the search logo at the top. I can move my cursor to the search button but I can't actually start a search, voice or otherwise. The only fix is to go into the settings and force close the app. Then it works on the next open...once.

I can't comment on the Netflix app, sorry.

Works well for me on Netflix and Kodi (I'm playing files directly from my NAS, Plex was just too fiddly to setup). No problem passing through AC3 and DTS to my receiver either, both on Kodi and Netflix.

Just make sure your Wifi is good enough for HD.

I use mine for Plex a lot, it's great.

I use mine for Netflix, Plex and I cast BT Sport and the BBC iPlayer apps to it (UK channels). Works absolutely fine. If you're only going to use it for Netflix and Plex it will do that excellently.

If your WiFi signal is strong and stable enough, then yes. The nexus player doesn't have an Ethernet port iirc.

i love mine. mostly use kodi.

anyone think they will come up with a new one? debating on getting another 1 for 50$ or just waiting for a new better one.

It's a great Netflix, music, and movie steamer when it works. I've had connection issues with my Wifi even after upgrading to an AC standard and using the 5GHz frequency. Bluetooth is absolutely broken in it though I've had issues with the remote and even the official controller losing connection after time for no reason. Only way to get out working was to re-pair it with the player. Plus the 8GB storage is just to small to really get more then a few games on it.

There's been a few updates which have really helped the plex performance, but you'll need a fairly decent server as a lot of items still need transcoding for the nexus player. Since kodi is in the app store there's an easy alternative if your server lacks the horse power to do high bitrate 1080 like mine. For the price I think it's now a decent player, but I'd go for the shield if I did it again.

Never had any problems with Netflix, though last time I used it there was no 5.1 pass through. Not sure where the limitation lies here, I'm not a big netflix user.
