Why do you need or want to upgrade?
There is speculation a new Nexus Player is expected soon considering we've seen some clearance pricing on the current model.
If a new nexus comes, I expect it to be price competitive with the 4k boxes from Amazon and Roku. I doubt it will be as good at gaming as the Shield.
If you want gaming and/or 4K just get the shield. It's a great device. I originally had a nexus player, tried using it for gaming but ended up moving it to the bedroom and getting a shield for the living room. The shield is worth the extra cost if you want high end performance.
Does the Razer Forge TV not compare?
I figured it would put up a good fight compared to the Shield.
It would be extraordinarily difficult to beat the Shield because even if another device could match the media performance, no other Android TV device can match what Nvidia offers in terms of gaming.
Nvidia have also been great about updating features like codecs.
