Does the Nexus player gamepad work smoothly as a Shield gamepad replacement or 2nd player option?

Not for many Shield only games like Trine, some GameStream games don't recognize it. It sucks, since the Shield controller only works on Nvidia hardware.

All Bluetooth controllers should work with all Android devices, so I'd say very likely
