New Sony Android TV owner with few questions

by number361

Hi!

I've recently bought a Sony TV, Sony KDL-50W755C. I heard the picture quality is great and it has android OS, but that's a bit still clunky in term of operating.

So! Since I've never owned any kind of smartTV (or any TV to be precise) I'd like to ask a few basic questions.

What I want:

  • Watching Youtube from my account using WIFI (aka I want too see my subscribed youtubers and their new posts and videos)
  • Watching Twitch streams using WIFI!
  • Playing .MKV files from USB or ext. hard drive
  • Connecting my PC via HDMI cable so I can play my PC games on my big screen. :)

I welcome any guide and tip and which app to use or not, what to do and how to make these work. Thanks in advance for the help and answers!

Android TV has YouTube already on it. It should play MKVs with the built in player.

I don't think Twitch has an Android TV app, but you can cast it from your Android or iPhone.

What are you even trying to ask? HDMI cable for PC to TV Stock Sony video player can play more file types than MX player YouTube shows Subscription videos Don't know if there's a twitch Android TV app but you can cast from the Twitch Android app.

There is a built in YouTube app (or it's on the Play Store if it's not preinstalled), but if you ask me, the app is total shit. You'd be much better off using your phone and casting to your TV instead. More features, and you can cast 60fps videos. The native app won't play 60fps videos for whatever reason.

Also, VLC player is available, you may want to give that a shot. You can also try Kodi. There's a handful of apps you can use.

By any chance, does your PC have an Nvidia card and support GameStream? You can download the Moonlight app and stream your games to your TV. I use it on my Nexus Player and it works great, I play Saints Row 4, GTA V, Rocket League and much more over it with minimal issues.
