Issues with nvidia Shield ATV...

by drgambit

Hello all, just purchased a shield a week ago, and am enjoying it so far. I have had a few issues that I would want to share and see if the group has had any of the same:

  1. I cannot perform a voice search from the controller, I contacted nvidia and they have told me that this is an issue that is going to be corrected. Is anyone else having this problem?

  2. When running the HBO GO chromecast app on my phone to the shield, I encountered a big red X and just sound only. A reboot fixed the problem... I was under the impression that the Shield had chromecast 'built-in', will this be a problem in the future?

  3. Does anyone thing marshmallow will improve or hinder the shield as it stands?

Thanks all!

Can't speak to your first two but I can to the 3rd. The big things Android 6.0 (marshmallow) provides for Android TV are

  • MPEG2 H/W Decoding
  • Bluetooth support
  • Formatting external storage as internal storage

The first two Nvidia has already built into the software from previous updates. The last one will be great for 16GB users who want more room. Plug in a 64GB thumbdrive, format as internal and bam, a lot more space for game installations.

Voice search works fine on mine. I did end up having a problem with the headphone jack on the controller but Nvidia was really good about the RMA and sent me the replacement controller without waiting to get the original back.

As for Chromecast, it is built in. It works fine 80% of the time, but every once in a while my Shield does require a reboot. Supposedly this is being investigated and will receive a patch.

/u/Andrroid has you covered on Marshmallow.

The Shield has a HBO GO native ATV app. You might try that instead of casting to the Shield.

Android TV has chromecast buildt in, but I'm pretty sure it's not running the same version as it does not work with spotify for example. Nor does it work with backdrop etc. Pretty sure it's coming though.
