New Shield TV owner- Where's the apps?

by agent_moler

I just got a shield yesterday and after tinkering with it for a few hours I'm a bit disappointed. I'm coming from an Apple TV 3rd gen. It's not the most powerful hardware but it does have many streaming service and AirPlay, which is great for getting video from my computer to the screen easily.

The shield has crazy powerful hardware but is severely lacking in streaming services. I primarily bought it because I thought it would be a full replacement for my Apple TV and more but it doesn't seem like it's ready.

How long has it taken you guys to get new streaming apps? Are they added monthly? Do you have any solutions for adding apps that are on android via sideloading that don't have touch emulation? I'd love to get Disney channel and adult swim working.

idk, I am seriously loving my shield tv. It has some console level games on it and is crazy fast. Not sure what you are looking for in streaming apps exactly, hopefully someone more experienced in that field can fill you in.

Apps have been trickling in recently. We just got twitch and hbo now.

More will come. With all the AndroidTV sales this week, the user base is hopefully growing enough to encourage development.

New apps come in whenever they're ready. You can visit http://AndroidTV.news to learn when new apps are published. (FYI: I'm a writer there)

Some apps run fine without touch emulation through sideloading. You can push files using ES File Explorer or putting apk files on a USB drive. However it doesn't guarantee they'll work on a TV. You'd need to test them out, perhaps emailing the developers asking for support.

I am with you. Got one yesterday with the great GameStop deal and the apps are severely lacking from the Apple TV I came from. Disney junior Nick junior Watch ESPN Hbogo doesn't work with charter on android tv, not shields fault

Just so many easy app misses I hope it improves.

I will say the pros far outweigh the cons. Kodi is a dream on this beast, it's very snappy, and hardware wise it looks great in my setup.

I hope they get as many apps as appletv but may be a pipe dream.

The Shield is ready. App developers that continue to treat Android as a red headed stepchild are not ready. They have their reasons. All we can do is buy the best devices available and wait for developers to open their eyes.

Disney and Adult Swim are available on Sling TV by the way.

Try Airtight to regain some of your AirPlay functionality... Although it looks like it has broken for iOS9
