Apps you have wanted for Android TV?

by nickm_27

Hello everyone, so I have been an app developer for a few months now and just replaced my nexus player with a shield TV. I am looking into possibly making an app for Android TV but I want to hear some ideas. So I have come to y'all, what utility or tool apps have you wished Android tv had? Thanks everyone

An easy to use browser would be awesome! I'd pay 5 bucks for a browser which is comfortable to use with the remote/controller.

Google Photos.

There a Mouse Toggle app that requires root. I'd pay $20 for it to work without root.

Someone else recommended this but I'll post it again because it is open source and the app dev, a fairly active redditor, made it clear last year that he was too busy with school/rl work to continue development. Really nice guy, I would suggest reaching out to him. This app is beautiful and would be great for Android TV optimization.

An emulator frontend made for a controller, currently use gamesome frontend on my mxIIIg but requires a mouse to set up and I don't know if the app will work on shield TV

Australia:
ABC iView
Catchup
Jumpin

SBS On Demand

Basically all the free-to-air tv on demand services Sony Android TVs seem to have

I would love to have my photos stored in the cloud stream like a cool screen saver, and also be able to play music while its streaming.

There's one app I found for Android TV that sorta does this by the Daydream feature, but its really limited and not well put together. It just changes the picture, nothing fancy about it or cool transition. I also can't manually trigger the app to start streaming. Have to wait like a screen saver to turn on.

I'd pay $3-4 for the app if it was well developed.

A map application would be cool.

I want to be able to cast Spotify songs from my phone with ease. Jamjitsu "works", but is really clumsy... Like pair it with the TV or something, I don't know. I have a Sony TV with Android if that helps. Edit: $10 app, and I'd buy it!

Just a simple twitter client would be nice. Or a simple reddit client that shows the top images and/or gifs/videos. Something that makes that content pop on your bigscreen TV. Or maybe an app to play the latest trailers to see what's coming up. edit: Oh, there's twit-on-tv now. Interesting.

There are multiple apps for mobile devices which allow to switch to the previous app. On Android TV you can only return to your home screen, some kind of app switcher would be cool.

SO /u/nickm_27 , What is your hottest lead? Decide on what you are going to tackle first?

Replacement launcher. Afaik there is only the default one that's shipped with ATV, I would love to see competition to improve the home screen ui

xcode18

Popcorntime

All I want is to be able to make sideloaded apps show up on the main screen

jamontoast1291

Twitter app!

SoundCloud. I can cast it, sure, but I actually like using the remote and would much rather use the remote to do it. And I wish Moonlight actually used an Android TV interface, rather than the regular Android UI. It works and all, but consistency would be great. More games would be great too, notably emulators. Spotify.

mastersans

Twitch, the current version that was modded for leanback is very poor

bjc1983

Something like Mizuu, a simple media manager. Something without all the extra stuff that Kodi has.

drboyfriend

ABC and History Channel apps.

Sheikboy_

An imgur app similar to Hopwatch for Reddit

ty_jax

NHL gamecenter for the love of god

YouTube Gaming as well. And YouTube Music while we're at it. And Apple Music, that would be nice.
