Equivalent to Chromecast idle Pictures on Android TV?

by aryonoco

Hi,

Just got myself a Shield ATV, waiting for it to be delivered now. It will be by first ATV device.

I've had a Chromecast for over 2 years and have loved it, but I know that Android TV has the cast functionality built in, so I'll probably be retiring the Chromecast to my parent's house. But aside from casting apps and webpages, one of the things I really enjoy about the Chromecast is the beautiful looping pictures that it shows on the screen when idle.

Is there an equivalent to this on Android TV? I'd hate to lose seeing all those beautiful pictures from Google+ and NASA and other sources, yet it seems ridiculous to keep the Chromecast just for that.

Android TV's do have daydream mode, but as of now it is slightly gimped compared to the Chromecast.

For example, there is no way to have it cast your own albums like you can with chromecast & you can't check on the source of the picture like you can with the Chromecast through the app.

You didn't mention either of these features in your post so I'm assuming they aren't super important to you. If that is the case, your SHIELD TV should function almost identically to your Chromecast!

The SHIELD does exactly that after a while of inactivity! Hope you'll like yours as much as we like ours!

All versions of Android TVs have daydream mode like the Chromecast

The feature you're talking about is Backdrop .

That word may help you in future searches for info/help.

On my Nexus Player, there's a "Daydream" setting that you can set to Backdrop. I don't recall seeing any G+ or NASA photos. I think it's a different Backdrop. The NP doesn't show up in the Chromecast app so I don't know how you would set what images you want to show up.

Daydream is the feature you're looking for on Android. Apps can support this, although it's not exactly the same as the Chromecast.
