I miss Google TV

by Jshim4653

So I had a Logitech Revue, which worked for years and was great. I never had to use the guide because I could search whatever channel something was on like the Ravens or Caps or Archer. But my friends broke my keyboard and I never really used it again.

I saw the deal for the Nvidia Shield, and I see that it doesn't have an hdmi input. It's more like an Apple TV correct? With apps for television? What's the best box to get that is more like the Revue? One that can show my cable box video. I'm not ready to cut the cord yet.

EDIT: So I manned up and did the deal for a Nvidia Shield and remote. I also bought the HDHOMERUN DVR so I can get my live tv. I can't wait till it gets here!

This is what you need to do to get a similar experience. Buy an Nvidia Shield and an HDHomerun Prime . You will need to contact Comcast for a CableCard which will allow you to get your channels. This card will cost you a small monthly fee, which is cheaper than what you pay for your cable box. This will allow you to get your channels.

The HDHomerun will plug into your network and The HDHomerun View app in the Play store will let you watch live channels. Now the HDHomerun View app does not have the greatest interface in the world but when you install it Android TV will unlock an app called Live channels. Live channels allows for apps to import streams into it to have a grid based view. Here is a good write up on it from /u/andrroid on what Live channels app is.

If you want DVR functionality, it is coming. SiliconDust (the company that makes the HDHomerun) is making a DVR system and its currently in beta. It is a little rough around the edges right now but it should work great. They have a record engine that works on Windows, Mac, Linux, and several network drives, and there is playback slated for Windows, Mac, and Android. According to one of the guys on the forums, they are going to integrate the DVR into the Live Channels app as well if you don't want to use their view app (which still needs to be installed).

If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I have an Nvidia Shield and I use it to play back DVR recordings all the time.

There currently is no Android TV device like the Revue with HDMI pass-through, but supposedly the platform supports it. This is a shame, I enjoyed mine as well. Skipr.tv announced that they were going to release an Android TV with this functionality but they haven't said much since.

Might I recommend getting an HDHomerun PRIME? I am currently using one to write up a review. Here is a guide that can give you a little idea of what to expect.

Essentially, with a network tuner you can pop in a cable card and access it through your Shield TV. It gives me the integrated feel that I missed about my Google TV.

I know it's not android, but the Xbox One does what your looking for...

Might want to look into a full HTPC with a cable card?

Google has a "Live Channels" app for Android TV but I don't think any devices take an HDMI input currently.

I feel you--I had a 2nd gen Sony box. I think your only option right now is to get a Sony or Sharp smart TV that has Android TV as the OS.

I still use the Revue, but it's really aged poorly. It's mostly just interfacing between the cable box now. It doesn't really do anything else since we got an Android TV.

I still think the Revue is/was the best TV watching experience ever. I still use mine, but i wanna throw it out the window every single day. If apple ever decides to do an HDMI passthrough on the AppleTV, i'll probably include them in my will!!

Why i love the Reve so much:

  • HDMI passthrough
  • Using the keyboard from anywhere in the house
  • use browser to stream from adfah(no torrent downloads)
  • Listening to music via AirPlay while the TV is off, since the audiobar is connected to the revue

As far as User Experience goes, the Revue killed it, but i always wondered why people hated it so much??? Let's recreate a similar and more powerful device. Anybody wants to start a Kickstarter with me and become billionaires? We can do this!
