PSA Kodi is comparable to a second app store

by bennyhillthebest

A lot of people are worried about the abysmal number of apps for Android TV and they're right. But at the same time i want to remember everyone that Kodi exists and work beautifully on the Shield. So if you have no problem troubleshooting a little bit to make things work you can use hundreds of addons instead of apps. I have had some problems lately with the Nba app and discovered an Nba addon which works better than the app. I've seen 2 or 3 Amazon Video addons too. Obviously they're user-developed so functionality is not guaranteed, but the number of broken or abandoned addons is very little and repositories are kept tightly clean. Lastly the kodi community is very active and if you have problems you can look up the wiki or write on the forum.

I really don't like having essentially a second OS running atop the primary one and attempting to duplicate most of its functionality. 90% of my needs are satisfied by native Android TV apps and the nature of kodi makes it somewhat annoying to use for only the remaining 10%.

Kodi as a second environment blows. Entirely different navigation, obscuring the experience even more.

I wish there was a way I could disable the default launcher and other unneeded processes and have my TV boot directly into kodi.

These are exactly the reasons I don't use Kodi. I'm past my days of wanting to tinker and stuff just needs to work and be gf/guest friendly. I know Kodi is a great option for some (I used to use it when it was XBMC) but its unfortunately not something I personally want to use.

Actually, one of the reasons I chose Android TV was for the beautiful, modern, simple and streamlined UI. The homescreen is great and the leanback UI in apps is slim and sexy.

This is a good idea, obviously not solving all shortfalls but it can bridge some gaps until Google actually pays attention to androidTV

The only add ons I know of are in the app itself. Are any of the plugins for Amazon Video available in Kodi?

Beyond that, where do I find additional add-ons and how do I install them?

Problem for me is understanding when a channel or add on or whatever they are called doesn't work. I want live TV for sports and that has been a trouble area for me. I totally take the blame as not being the most knowledgeable in Kodi but I tinker and get almost all that I want out of it.

Kodi is phenomenal and very easy to use once set up, but the set up can be daunting for some, including myself.

I would love to use Kodi more but it's too much trouble. I don't know much about it and having to learn a whole new environment is taxing. The add-ons that come stock are pretty useless and I, as of now, have no idea how to add new repo's and which repo's are worth it and what add0ons are where and all that other stuff.

Maybe I'll hobby it at some point but maybe not. With Plex all I had to do was add the unofficial app store and everything was right there.

"Kodi exists and work beautifully on the Shield"

Kodi exists, but that user experience, design and app structure is far from beautiful on the Shield. And a lot of those addons are pirated feeds and I'm just not into that.
