This would be for my parents who aren't too techy. They do use a Nexus smartphone though, and I thought Android TV could be a nice complement.

Mobile phone interface . Aside from remote control and USB keyboard, it would be nice to have a mobile phone based interface. One that for instance allowed to use Google keyboard to input text when using Android TV apps. Or as a generic Android TV remote control.
-
Video calls using smartphone camera . Set the mobile next to the TV, and be able to video call with Hangouts or Viber.

Allows for SuperSU + Adaway . I would set that up of course. Ads can be a pain.
If these aren't supported, any idea if they are being worked on for the short term?
Also would this be something I could eventually get with a software update (e.g. on Nexus player) or am I better if waiting for something new?
There is Android remote control app for Android TV. It is basically on-screen version of remote but can use phone keyboard to enter text.
There is one app, Tellybean, that does video chat on Android TV. It looks like it only works with some devices like the Nvidia Shield.
There isn't any reason to root and install ad blocker. There are no ads except for ads inside video streams.
