Shield TV, any reason to root?

by Tia_and_Lulu

I just joined the crowd, wanted a 4k plex player for going forward, but I can't see much if any reason to root. What can be done with it rooted?

I have Concast's delightful "services" but couldn't find their app in the play store, is there any way to install it?

Any apps everyone should use or be aware of

E: how can I move files to the Shield? Do I just stick a USB stick in? Is there a file manager?

I rooted mine so I could mount a network drive to it.

There's an SD card slot you can use to expand storage, and ES File Explorer works fine for file management (and can connect to network shares to copy files from), though the controls can be a bit annoying.

Look up apps specific to the channels you like if you have cable, like Food Network which lets you login through your cable provider, etc.

I haven't rooted mine, but the only thing that is tempting me is touchpad functionality on the controller. It would make things so much easier with side loaded apps that are not compatible with Android Tv.

I would love for some way to use a mouse/touchpad on the Shield using the controller or phone without using additional hardware.

Something to remap controller buttons might be useful, is what I'm planning for mine.

there's supposedly an app that restores touchpad functionality to the silver triangle on the controller. pretty low on my list of priorities.

i'm not sure if xposed works, but if it does, you could get rid of youtube ads.

custom launchers, better gaming compatibility. but you lose the shield ctrl support, devs havent figured how to mimic the wifi gamepad support. if youvr got a backup gamepad go for it
