What do you have on your Android TV?

by inwats

I just spent my XMAS Amazon gift certificate on a Minix Neo X8H Plus. It's an upgrade from a bunch of stuff that half-works (FireTV stick with Kodi, slow Roku). It should arrive just in time to mess around on New Years Eve.

The plan so far is to install Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Kodi, Plex, and replace the launcher (with what I don't know yet).

I'm looking for inspriation for what else I should think about installing on it. Emulators, games, communication, screensavers (do they even exist?), etc. What do you have on your Android TV?

Edit: ok I get it, I should return it. I'll probably hold on to it to use for a second TV and grab a Shield. Thanks for the feedback.

Hate to break it to you, but you didn't buy an Android TV.

Amazon lists that thing as $160. For a little bit more you could have a shield TV, the most powerful streamer on the market IMO.

We really need a PSA about "TV boxes that run Android" versus "Android TV" boxes.

As its been stated, this is really a "Android Tablet" without a screen/battery and some sort of couch distance launcher. Although this would do plenty you should really return it if at all possible. For just a hair more you can have your hands on the Nvidia SHIELD Android TV and have one of the best streamers in existence ATM. If you can't spend more I would still recommend returning and picking up a Nexus Player and pocketing the extra dough. Long term these boxes don't hold up well with software updates which open you up to all kinds of security vulnerabilities, not to mention new features that come with newer versions of android.

FYI

Netflix will only give you 480p quality. All these junky Chinese android boxes are not authorized to play HD Netflix.

Return it, while you still can.

You were better off with your FireTV Stick in term of "real" support

I love the game ' Windward '. One of the most in-depth games I've played for Android (although I may just not know better). If anyone could recommend me some big, in-depth games, please do! I don't know what kind of hardware is in the Minix Neo but it might be a tough one to run. Windward has a free test run tool so you can check the performance on your device.

If you're used to tuning in to something calm and relaxing before you go to sleep, try Pluto , it's a live channel thing with some really chill (read sleep inducing) programs.

There's a pretty good PSP emulator ( PPSSPP ) for playing PSP games if you're into that. It apparently can play Little Big Planet and some GTA games (although you could just buy those off the play store directly).
