Home Screen Launcher - use sideloaded launchers on Android TV

by farmerbb

As some of you may know, the latest update to the Android TV Launcher disabled the ability to set other launchers as default. Up until this update I used Google Now Launcher on my SHIELD because it works well with a d-pad and of course, lets you launch apps that aren't specifically optimized as Leanback apps. Not wanting to be forced into using something by Google, I decided to take things into my own hands.

I wrote an app that lets you run launchers directly from the Android TV interface. It adds a "Home Screen" tile that, when selected, will load the launcher of your choice once it has been sideloaded onto the device. It's unimaginatively titled "Home Screen Launcher" because yo dawg, I put a launcher in your launcher so that you can launch while you launch.

Wanted to share this because I know there are a few people in this sub that are also affected by this, and while it's not a perfect solution to the problem, works well enough for me.

Thank you for this. I miss having Nova as my nexus player's launcher

Nice work! Does this change it to the default launcher too?

Can you add an option to select any sideloaded app to open when this app is launched. What you could do is put a generic tile and when we click on the it would open a sideloaded app. This will be very useful if someone has just one sideloaded app that he wants to open so that he doesn't need to use a different launcher for it. Also if its possible we can give this tile a custom name. Can you do that?

Is this app still being supported?

I wasn't able to get this to work...

Any ideas?
