The shield's specs says it supports BLE or bluetooth low energy "smart bluetooth" standard. I'm hoping this could act as a nice relay that could help me remotely lock and unlock my front door without having to buy the $80 KEVO plus gateway.

To follow on what /u/rbinary stated try sideloading the application. If it is not controller friendly try picking up an AIRmote/controller combo. This will allow you to navigate as a mouse as well as a controller.
Theoretically, yes - you could probably install (i.e. sideload) the app on your SHIELD and if it's in range, unlock/lock your door with it.
The hard part is remoting in to the SHIELD/app - unsure if this is directly supported in the KEVO app...
