With the Nexus Player now being over a year old, when do you guys expect we'll see a version 2?

It seems like 2016 is primed to be the year for 4K to start making a splash. Sure, the TV sets have been available for a couple years now, but there's been very little content to go with it. Of course with Netflix, Amazon Prime and others dabbling with 4K, it seems like it's only a matter of time before Google Play does as well. The only issue with that though is that they currently have no first party devices capable of playing HEVC content on your TV.

Obviously, the Nvidia Shield is already capable of HEVC decoding, and is able to take advantage of Netflix's 4K offerings, but the device is still a little on the pricy side, and likely offers features that the average media junky isn't interested in, most notably the gaming. It seems like the market is ripe for an Android TV device that is $99-$125 that is capable of handling 4K, and the Nexus Player seems like the obvious choice to scratch that itch. Do you think we'll see something announced soon, or do you think Google is going to let someone else take a crack at it?

My guess is a 2 year release cycle, same as chromecast.

Fall 2016 - Nexus Player v2

Fall 2017 - Chromecast v3

Keep in mind, Nexus devices are rarely designed to make a profit. They are meant to encourage development and growth within the ecosystem and showcase new features. Sort of a baseline for OEMs to use. The Nexus 6P however, has been an exception to this model.

Maybe as early as I/O, but could be as late as Oct/Nov alongside a new Nexus phone.

I definitely think this year could be the year they release a successor, but it might boil down to what kind of CPU they want to use. They could be waiting for something in the pipeline from Intel.

As we told people who thought we'd get a Nexus Player v2 last year, its not getting a v2 until late 2016 at the very least and late 2017 at the very most.

What kind of updates are you hoping for?

Who said there would be a new nexus player every year? Why does there need to be one?

I'm holding out on a Nexus Player until it gets 4K and/or Ethernet. I'm loving Android TV on my Sony Bravia, but want an Android device for my other TV in my bedroom. With the stock on current models near non-existent, I was hoping to see a new Nexus this past Holiday shopping season. Unfortunately, looks like I'll have to wait even longer.

Player has been out of stock every where here in Canada since November. Figured a new one was coming soon.

I don't know when version two will come out. But I feel version three will come out in April of 2018 right after TiVo's patent expires, and they can freely incorporate some kind of DVR like software into it.

If they go for 4k, hopefully they wait until there is an HDMI standard supporting 4K@60fps with HDR.

Frankly, IMO if you're not willing to invest money into quality gear 4k isn't even relevant yet.
