Nvidia Shield TV

by Southernboyj

Anyone else have the Nvidia Shield player with a 4K TV? I just purchased mine this week since I have a 4K TV.

It looks like the interface on it isn't displaying in 4K. Text, images, etc just look soft. Like it's outputting 1080p and having to upscale.

Keep in mind, I'm taking about the home screen.. Not streaming video.

Shield TV doesn't have 4k UI assets yet :(

Since we're talking 4K and Shield TV, does anyone get a black screen at random for half a second and then everything is fine? I get this a few times a week. When I do, I reboot and it goes away for a few more days. The other 1080p ports on my TV don't do this. So either its an issue with that specific 4K HDMI port or the Shield itself?

Not being condescending, just obvious checklist. Specific Input on TV is 4k capable? Many 4k TVs don't have same support on every input. Proper HdMI cable? Some legacy cables might cause fallback to 1080p. All hubs, switches, receivers on the Shield TVs signal 4k capable? Can you verify in SHIELD TVs settings and on TV the signal is reporting 4K? Also, Shield TV is HdMI 2.0, be careful you aren't trying to feed that to a HdMI 1.4 4k 30p input.

All that being said, I know on Android phones with qhd screens there is indeed scaling going on the launcher. I'm not certain on Android TV, it may be the case. A lot of it is dependent on what dpi the manufacturer uses. It's possible android M will change some of this.

I've got 4K working on a Vizio M60C. Fonts and UI look fine. I've switched to 1080P while testing ports, there is definitely a noticeable difference in the sharpness of the UI.

Not sure what nononoitsfine is referring too. Maybe the uploaded assets from the play store? Regardless, the typography and layout of the containers should all be pixel perfect since they are rendered by the OS.

I have mine connected to a 4K Sony x810c, and it looks great to me. Definitely not fuzzy or soft

Include a closeup photo of something in the UI with details?

Android 5.1 and below don't support 4K UI elements, the devices reports as having a 1080p screen for any apps that try and query it. Only video playback can bypass that limitation.

In 6.0 it's possible to query the screen with a special call and get a 4K surface. Even with that, developers have to be aware of the call and update their app, so I'd expect many apps will have 1080p for a long time to come.

Any updates on this issue yet? I have the shield hooked up to my p-series and having the hdmi5 disconnect-reconnect problem.

I think I found a fix.
Connected pc via hdmi with a 970m graphics card into hdmi 5. Adjusted display to 1080p 60hz no disconnecting issue. Then adjusted to 4k at 30hz (no hdmi2.0 so no native 60hz). Disaplay disconnect issue stopped. Disconnected pc, then reconnected shield. Connected successfully at 60hz 4k without any disconnect issue.

How is the upscaling quality to 4K for the shield? I've read it's not great.
