Only stereo output from Nvidia Shield TV?

by Kralizec9

Until recently I was using a 6+ year old basic onkyo receiver. Everything was working fine with my shield. 5.1 surround sound and 1080p output (All my tv supports). It died 2 weeks ago and I decided to replace it with a new receiver.

I went with a Denon AVR-X1200W which just arrived. Only with the new receiver the shield only seems to be outputting in stereo from all sources. Is the shield and hdmi cable that comes with it fully hdmi 2.2 compliant? Its frustrating that a new higher end receiver is giving less performance than an old cheap receiver. My first suspect is the hdmi cable but wondering if anyone else has any ideas.

Thank you.

I have an Onkyo receiver and 5.1 works fine with my Shield TV. Two things I can think of off the top of my head.

  1. What is the Denon showing its receiving from the Shield TV?

  2. I know with my Onkyo I can change its listening modes and can down convert a 5.1 signal to stereo. Make sure something like that isn't accidentally enabled.

I don't know what you are using to play your content but in Kodi you have to manually specify your speaker configuration in settings. Also make sure HDMI pass through is enabled in Kodi.

Is your setup: Shield > receiver > TV?

I just got a Denon S710W 2 days ago but have yet to hook it up... Let me know what you find out as I think we are pretty much in the exact same boat.

I had a similar issue at first with my Shield TV, and the culprit was a setting on my Sony receiver. It was set to pass-through audio to my television over HDMI, which was causing it to only output 2.0.

Shield is fully compatible. The only variable here is the receiver. Time to play with the settings.

Make sure to reboot your Shield. Some apps are known to have problems with hotplug.

I have a shield TV plugged in to my Denon AVR-X2200W by default the shield shows 'Stereo'. Dig out the original remote that came with the amp and look down the bottom row the green/red/blue/yellow buttons, now choose what soundscape you want ie 'GAME' and press it so it cycles through the options and choose Dolby surround.
