I don't want them to rush the Marshmallow update for ShieldTV, there's still little bugs people have been having with the tablet and Nexus player update.
The page on first glance makes it seem like 6.0 is available. But if you look closely it says:
Android OS version with Vulkan support: Android 6.0 "Marshmallow"
SHIELD update with Vulkan support: OTA 3.0.0 (or higher)
Expected shipping date of SHIELD update: Very soon
Developer preview OS available NOW, see below.
So now instead of "by the end of 2015" we have "very soon" as an expected release date.
Definitely excited for the update. Is it dumb to hold out hope that they'll bundle the Amazon Instant Video app with the update? That would be sweet.
I would really like to know what gets fixed by the update. M alone doesn't quite excite me.
How about mapping all IR signals so the thing does actually support Harmony remotes. People started buying FLIRCs because nVidia has done nothing about it.
How about supporting non-US keyboard layouts. It is there in Android. Wonder why it isn't on Android TV.
How about reacting to the actual mouse button in Leanback. Ye get a mouse pointer but the return key on the keyboard becomes the click event. Minor, but shoddy.
How about Chrome/Hangouts/Skype? I had considered giving the Shield TV to my mom, attach a Logitech Webcam to it and let her use Skype/Hangouts with it. Her current setup with a tablet doesn't work because the elderly emit an EMF that screws up WIFI signals.
At the moment the Shield TV has the most powerful SOC on the market and yet we get to do less with it than a cheap chinese box that costs a fraction of it.
There are links right on the page to sign up for the dev preview...
"Expected shipping date of SHIELD update: Very soon"
I think that says right there they haven't forgotten.
