Android box with DTS and 4K

by skyneon

Hello guys,

Sorry if other post talk about it but i really didn't find my answer. So first i'm not a professional so maybe my question will look stupid or incorrect, sorry for that.

I looking for a Android Tv box but i have hard time to find the model i should take. I need a box able to deal with 4k ( 3840 x 2160) and with DTS support, if possible with the optical sound output because i had bad experience with the setup like box->TV-> home cinema So i wish do something like the box send the video on the tv and the box send the sound on the home cinema. And also with an RJ-45 (Ethernet) plug because wifi is really a pain for large files streaming. All the media will be stream from a nas ( in case that make a difference for the model)

thank you for your time

Your only option is a ShieldTV, and thats not a bad thing. Its a great box. Marshmallow will be out very soon so hopefully it'll get even better.

agree with other suggestions ShieldTV will be your best shot, I love mine run kodi(previously xbmc) on it with retroarch allowing me to use it as a media centre, a kickass emulator for retro consoles and also a console for current games using my pc to stream via geforce gamestreaming (assuming you have a pc with a supported nvidia card)

so in regards to your questions specificity:

support for 4k: yes

DTS Support: yes

optical sound out: unfortunately no however you may have better experience with HDMI this time round?

RJ-45 socket: yes 1Gbps ethernet support

media streaming from a NAS: yes, install Kodi (available from the play store on the device directly) and add your NAS as a source to grab files from.

reply if you have any more questions ;)

There are two different platforms - Android, and Android TV. Netflix is only 1080p (and 4K) on Android TV, which is a deal-breaker for some when it comes to buying/building a generic Android HTPC. Also, the Android TV apps are all designed to work with a remote, where as the Android version will be kind of bring-your-own.

Honestly, if your goal isn't to have a box your kids/parents can use, and you want 1080p Netflix, then an old laptop will work just as well for your needs.

But if you want it to be dead simple but more versitile than Roku/Apple TV, then /u/watchyirc is right - Get a Shield.

The optical output is mostly because before (using pc/linux) i had sound delay when i plug the sound system on the tv and no delay when plug on the pc

I don't use Netflix anyway in the country i live the amount of choices on netflix is really poor at best. That will be mostly for the family and stream large 4k files from the NAS.

I will take a look on the Shield thank you for you answers

Nvidia Shield TV supports this. I use 4K and DTS all the time in Kodi. I feed HDMI into the TV from the Shield and then take optical / TOSLINK output from the TV and pipe it into the AV receiver. Works great.
