How might I go about connecting it to my Nexus Player? Total noob here. (I also have two wireless PS3 controllers and a plethora of Nintendo peripherals in case either of those are easier.)

The Nexus Player has a USB micro port. The Xbox 360 controller uses regular USB. Get a USB to USB micro adapter. I use this one to connect my 360 controller to the Nexus Player. It works great and all games that I have tried that support controllers (disclaimer: about 10) seem to work out of the box. Choose a US seller if you want fast delivery. Avoid adapters that will not fit well into the space under your Nexus Player ( not this 1 , not this 2 ).
Oh, as for Xbox stuff, I don't think it's possible wirelessly, but USB works however you will need to reconfigure inputs through a 3rd party app or inside emulators etc
Without looking too much into it as my net is dead, I believe Nintendo stuff is easiest by far to connect to android, don't mean to sound rude but googling "wiimote android", or " PS3 controller android" shows a heap of articles and even some apps on the play store
Wired Xbox controller is plug and play. Also, a generic Xbox receiver will make your wireless controllers plug and pkay, as well.
