I had switched to adoptable storage, but many of my apps had performance hits, or crashed on startup (Gamesome in particular). I have performed a factory reset and set the sd as normal external storage. Is there a way now to write to it via ftp? I tried via es File Explorer pro, but it was actually writing to the internal emulated storage.

Thanks for the clarification on the issue, This is definitely a known issue with Android M and is a Google android issue that is also present on the Nexus TV, we were able to reproduce this issue there as well. We were made aware of this issue the day of the Android M update and are tracking this internally now and trying to work with Google to get this addressed.
That would be a no. Some people reckon they've got it to work via file explorer but it never worked for me. Nothing will pick up my ShieldTV on my network. Which is one of the reasons I think the Shield TV is massively overrated.
