How do we convince developers to port/support their games to Android TV?

by ModXMV

There are some great new games that have come out that would be great on Android TV. I know that there needs to be install base to generate revenue, etc. Right now I'm looking at Downwell specifically. The game already has controller support and works on Steam. I would love to see this on Android TV. It seems to be a perfect fit. How do we as a community voice our desire for Android TV without brigading the app reviews that will get a dev's attention?

Email them and leave reviews. If something is requested, they'll look into adding it. I'm personally hoping LIMBO gets Android TV support, it's already on Android and already has controller support.

I usually start with an email to them and also invite them to join a discussion here or on the Android TV community at Google Plus.

It might be as easy as sending emails asking politely for Leanback support. If the app already supports a gamepad, then it's basically just having a banner (which you could even create a 320x180 banner as a suggestion).

Twitter is also a good way to get in contact with devs.

Have to convince them its worth their time.

If the engine they use already supports Android (eg. Unity, Unreal, SDL, etc.), and the game isn't too demanding of hardware, and it already supports controller, porting to AndroidTV is easier than porting to touch-only Android.

They just need to know a market exists.

If they support Linux (also a small market), that's a good indicator

I don't have time for this unfortunately at the moment but if I would have it, this is how I would do it:

Create a Web site explaining the issue and linking to the various resources on how to port applications to Android TV, how to add controller support and so on. This could really help developers because starting something is the most difficult thing. The site would also have a list with games we want to be ported or which work. Also reviews would be there.

We could expose games which need Android TV support. All in a positive way of course. We do not want bad press for developers who do not wish to do it.

Then we contact, email the developers about the site and our wishes. We can even get support from Google, but I wouldn't get my hopes high for that one.

This could be easily a section on say, androidpolice.com and not a site by itself.

Again, this should be Googles job.

I try to contact every dev who supports the Shield Tablet (with controller support) to make their app work on Shield TV and the only answer I've ever recieved is "no"

I use my android TV exclusively for watching media and never, not once, for games.

As far as i can tell, this applies to everyone I know with "smart" set to boxes too. The gamers have dedicated gear. The rear play games on their phones or tablets.

So it's probably not worth their time.
