Old android phone as full fledged Android TV remote

by bugeyedmajormanuals

I have a Nexus Player. NP remote is... okay but I want more from it. I want a remote that has a 3.5mm plug and receives audio, is rechargeable, has a keyboard (a good plus) and can change volume.

Shield TV remote is good; but at 50 bucks and no keyboard, no thanks. I discovered Rii K25A in Amazon; perfect but it's nearly $40.

I have a rooted Nexus S. Everything is still working well. I'm thinking what apps do I need to put in this old phone so it can be a full fledged Android TV remote.

Edit: added the need of volume controls

the remote app from google themselves works well: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tv.remote&hl=en_GB

Although I think its lacking volume controls, I'm not sure what app supports that I'm afraid.

I think your out of luck when it comes to a remote with a headphone jack, though if you find one let me know, I'd like to retire my 30 foot 3.5mm cable.
