Noob questions

Im thinking about getting an Android TV box. Im not sure how it works in terms of being able to watch any movie you want, does it have nothing to do with the box and all to do with the apps that could be taken down rendering the box a paper weight?

Also I have a big home theater and I and if I can't watch 1080p with a bitrate at least as good as netflix on a console level, and 5.1 surround on most movies, I will probably not be going for it, as i've invested too much money in my set-up to watch sub par quality. Does quality also depend on the quality of the box itself?

Edit: I've also seen a lot of big "4k" stickers slapped on ads for these boxes on ebay and amazon, is that BS?

If you want 1080P HD Netflix, stay away from all of those android boxes on Amazon. HD Netflix is only going to be on The Nvidia Shield TV and The Nexus Player. Those boxes with the Mali gpu and amlogic, rockchip and allwinner processors are no longer compelling devices. They lack the DRM to play HD content from premium subscription services like Netflix.

Edit: this has the info on official android tv devices. https://www.android.com/tv/

Note: The Razer Forge TV which is an official android tv does NOT support Netflix

If you want a reliable device for a home theater, do not buy any of those knock off Android "TV" boxes on Amazon. There's a reason they boast their specs as much as they do: it's nonsense to make you see past the fact that their products are shit.

Get a nexus player or better, shield TV. The shield is what I use for my home theater and it does the job gloriously.
