Has Google ever actually addressed multiple profiles?

by irishtexmex

Obviously it's a feature of the handheld version of Android OS, and it makes soooooooooooooo much sense for Android TV.

I'm just wondering if it's ever, actually been mentioned by the Android TV dev team?

Hi. Dad here. My YouTube profile is littered with Minecraft videos and random cartoons. This is just one example. So yes, yes I would love multiple profiles for Android TV.

I'm sure there isn't going to be proper multi user support, by Play will gain proper Family Sharing.

Ultimately I'm guessing all apps and media inside a family will be shared between accounts, which would make everything accessible on an Android TV.

Yes multiple account with passwords. But instead of letters/numbers for passwords have button combinations and only allow three attempts so people can't just keep guessing. Idk why that hasn't been added to consoles.

There is currently a gmail trick that at least works for youtube (you need to sign off and on on the youtube app each time you want to change):

1.- You need to first sideload a regular android gmail apk you can get on apkmirror.

2.- Go into Settings->personal->add account->Personal(POP3)

3.- Enter your email, then choose Gmail in the next prompt.

4.- Select "Use your phone or laptop" and complete the instructions there.

You should see two google accounts linked in the settings.

As for officially from google, not yet, it's been on their AOSP issue tracker for almost a year, but is not yet assigned:

Multi User request

You could always give it a star to see if it gets more attention.

"Actually multi-user support is in N :) But apps (including our own) still need to implement the account switcher."

I've never heard of it. But my opinion is that they want to handle it differently than on mobile. It's a living room device. Switching from one profile to another would not make any sense.

You should be able to have one library of games and apps a la Xbox. I guess they still didn't figure out how they will solve that problem as installing an app only puts it in the profile database of the current user. And you want to have the apps accessible by all users of the system and naturally you would want to play a game with your user. Also they need to somehow handle multi-player with multiple user profiles at the same time.

Edit: Downvotes for expressing opinion? Okay.
